The pictures are taken in the Belgachia Slum in Howrah, next to Kolkata in West Bengal, India.
Documenting life in a slum is a tricky challenge. Due to global hierarchies, slum tourism and other moral challenges, it is not easy to leave the filed without feeling bad. I have written an article about the topic here. Besides this ethic considerations, staying in the Belgachia Slum was a unique experience. Even though I coughed even four weeks after the trip, it broadened my horizon. No matter how bad the living conditions of human beings are, there can always be friendship and a glimpse of humanity. During my three days in the slum, I stayed with a lovely family, who were as hospitable as one could be. I will never forget the time there.
